Where to find the VIN on a Jeep

  • Dashboard, driver's side, visible through the windshield from outside the vehicle. This is the easiest spot on nearly every Jeep.
  • Driver's door jamb, on the certification label, alongside tire pressures and build date.
  • Frame / engine bay stamps, Jeeps also carry the VIN stamped on the frame and major components, which is especially useful on Wranglers when verifying the vehicle hasn't had VIN plates swapped.

Locations vary slightly by model and year, if the dashboard plate is missing or looks tampered with, have the vehicle inspected before buying.

What each part of a Jeep VIN means

12–17 Serial number Unique to the vehicle

Common Jeep WMI prefixes

The first three characters of the VIN tell you where the Jeep was built:

  • 1C4, FCA US LLC, multipurpose passenger vehicle (modern Jeeps including Wrangler)
  • 2C4, FCA Canada Inc., multipurpose passenger vehicle
  • 3C4, FCA Mexico (Toluca), multipurpose passenger vehicle
  • 1J4, Older Jeep WMI, seen on vehicles such as the 1997–2006 Wrangler (TJ)
  • 1C6, FCA US LLC, truck (e.g. Gladiator) (VERIFY-BEFORE-PUBLISH)

The 1C4/2C4/3C4 codes come from FCA's published VIN decode documentation; 1J4 is documented on period Wrangler VINs. Mark additional codes for review before adding them to this page.

Open recalls on Jeeps

Our free decoder includes open NHTSA recalls for the VIN you enter. Recalls are fixed free by dealers, but a used Jeep with unrepaired recalls is a negotiation point, not a dealbreaker.

Buying a used Jeep? Read the history first

Wranglers in particular hold value well, and salvage rebuilds are common on them, a totaled Wrangler can be worth rebuilding precisely because buyers pay strong money for the finished product. Jeeps also live hard lives: off-road modifications like lifts and oversized tires can hide frame and suspension damage, and flood exposure is a persistent risk. A full vehicle history report covers title brands, accident records, odometer readings, and salvage history.

Full history reports are launching soon, the free decoder above already gives you specs and open recalls today. (Honest framing: do not imply the paid report exists yet.)
