Where to find the VIN on a GMC
- Dashboard, driver's side, printed on a plate visible through the windshield from outside the vehicle. The standard location on every Sierra, Yukon, Acadia, and Canyon.
- Driver's door jamb, on the certification label, alongside GVWR, tire pressures, and the build month/year.
- Frame rail (Sierra, Canyon pickups), stamped into the frame on the driver's side. On trucks, this is the most tamper-resistant VIN location, and smart buyers compare it against the dashboard plate.
- Engine bay, stamped on the firewall or inner fender on some models; useful as a secondary verification point.
Locations vary slightly by model and year. If the dashboard plate is missing, loose, or shows signs of tampering, have the truck inspected before you buy.
What each part of a GMC VIN means
| Positions | Name | What it tells you |
|---|---|---|
| 1β3 | WMI (World Manufacturer Identifier) | Who built it and in which country |
| 4β8 | VDS (Vehicle Descriptor Section) | Chassis/series, GVWR and brake system, body style, restraint system, engine |
| 9 | Check digit | Mathematically validates the VIN per 49 CFR 565 |
| 10 | Model year | e.g. L = 2020, M = 2021, N = 2022, P = 2023, R = 2024, S = 2025, T = 2026 (repeats on a 30-year cycle) |
| 11 | Assembly plant | Which factory built it (e.g. F = Flint, Z = Fort Wayne on Sierra) |
| 12β17 | Serial number | Unique to the individual vehicle |
GM's VDS is unusually detailed on trucks: positions 5β6 encode the chassis/series (for example, 8-series = Sierra 1500 4x2), position 4 encodes GVWR class and brake system, and position 7 encodes the restraint system.
Common GMC WMI prefixes
| WMI | Built in | Typical vehicles |
|---|---|---|
| 1GT | USA | Sierra 1500/2500/3500 pickups, "1" = USA, "G" = General Motors, "T" = GMC truck |
| 1GK | USA | Yukon, Acadia SUVs, "K" = GMC multi-purpose vehicle |
| 2GT | Canada | Canada-built Sierra trucks (e.g. Oshawa) |
| 2GK | Canada | VERIFY-BEFORE-PUBLISH, appears in GM VIN guides as the Canada GMC MPV code |
| 3GK | Mexico | VERIFY-BEFORE-PUBLISH, appears in GM VIN guides as the Mexico GMC MPV code |
Sierra assembly plants (per GM's NHTSA-filed VIN standards): F = Flint, Michigan; Z = Fort Wayne, Indiana; G = Silao, Mexico. The Acadia is built in Spring Hill, Tennessee (plant code Z), and the Canyon in Wentzville, Missouri (plant code 1) on recent model years.
Open recalls on GMCs
Our free decoder includes open NHTSA recalls for the VIN you enter. Recalls are repaired free of charge by dealers, and on a truck you depend on for work, an unresolved recall can mean downtime, check the recall status on the exact VIN before you buy, not just the model name.
Buying a used GMC? Read the history first
GMC trucks command premium prices, a clean-looking Sierra Denali or Yukon can sell for tens of thousands of dollars, which makes them prime targets for rebuilt-title resale and flood-damage fraud. Trucks also live harder lives than sedans: work trucks haul, tow, plow, and idle for hours, and cosmetic repairs can hide frame damage or flood exposure. A rebuilt title can cut a truck's value dramatically, so a seller hiding a brand has a strong financial incentive. A full vehicle history report covers title brands, accident records, odometer readings, and salvage history β the records that matter most on high-value trucks.
State-specific resources you can use today:
- Texas: The TxDMV's "Title Check, Look Before You Buy" points buyers to approved NMVTIS providers for low-cost title reports. Texas law requires "Flood Damage" on the title of a flood-totaled vehicle, and the Texas Attorney General estimates 500,000β1,000,000 vehicles were submerged during Hurricane Harvey β a standing reason to check every Texas-titled GMC.
- Florida: FLHSMV's "Motor Vehicle Check" (MVCheckWeb) accepts a VIN or title number and shows Florida title information, useful when a used GMC spent time in hurricane country.
- California: If a GMC was totaled and later rebuilt, the California DMV issues a branded title and registration for the revived salvage vehicle, and requires inspections before it returns to the road.
Full history reports are launching soon, the free decoder above already gives you factory specs and open recalls today. (Honest framing: do not imply the paid report exists yet.) Either way, pair any VIN check with an independent pre-purchase inspection.

GMC VIN FAQ
How many characters is a GMC VIN?
17 characters, like every vehicle built for the US market since 1981. The letters I, O, and Q are never used.
Can I get a free GMC vehicle history report?
Our free decoder gives you factory specs and open NHTSA recalls at no cost and with no signup. Full history reports (title brands, accidents, odometer) are launching soon.
What does the 10th character of the VIN mean?
The model year. On recent GMCs, L = 2020, M = 2021, N = 2022, P = 2023, R = 2024, S = 2025, T = 2026. The codes repeat every 30 years, so our decoder resolves the year using the full VIN.
Where was my Sierra built?
Check position 11 of the VIN against GM's plant codes: F = Flint, Michigan, Z = Fort Wayne, Indiana, and G = Silao, Mexico on recent Sierra models. The WMI's first character (1 = USA, 2 = Canada, 3 = Mexico) confirms the country.
Conclusion
Every GMC has a story written into its 17-character VIN, and a history written into its title records. Start with our free decoder for instant specs and open recalls, then run a full history check and get an independent inspection before you buy.
